Houston Public Works crews are working to repair a "huge water leak" that has hampered or entirely cut off water supply for more than 100 homes in Northwest Houston, the Houston Chronicle's Dylan McGuinness reported Tuesday.
"For those without water/low water in the Inwood area, there is a huge water leak at Antoine and Tidwell. Repair work is happening now. I will provide more information as it becomes available. Please avoid the intersection as repair work continues," Houston City Councilwoman Amy Peck said in a Tuesday tweet.
Peck added in a later tweet Tuesday that "as of 11:27 AM today… a boil water notice has not been issued, per Public Works. We will continue to work with them to share any information if anything changes."
McGuinness reported Tuesday that "crews are working to ensure the damage does not disrupt a nearby stormwater line… and the department is gathering more details on the severity of water outages."
According to McGuinness, crews took until around 4 p.m. Monday to find the leak, even though area residents first noticed the issue on Sunday.
The City of Houston last issued a boil water notice in November, after a power outage caused water pressure to drop below safety standards at the East Water Purification Plant near Galena Park and the Buffalo Bayou. The city doubled its water line repairs spending last year, as aging infrastructure and drought conditions increased stress on Houston's pipes, McGuinness reported.
The city's water-related 311 calls have spiked this week: there have been 155 reports of water leaks and 116 requests for water service Monday and 99 and 13 the day before, respectively, according to McGuinness.
